Ok so last week I offered a statement that I was willing to bet that there were no players in Brewer history (with the same amount of AB's) as Counsell with a lower OPS. Turns out I was wrong, but it also turns out that Counsell is really, really, really bad.
So here are the numbers, crunched from the Official team site. Pretty easy to find actually.
Counsell has 995 career AB's with Milwaukee. In those AB's he has an OPS of .642. Yikes. Pretty bad eh? But not as bad as this list of rusty gates.
T. Johnson .540
M. Felder .624
E. Romero .619
M.Matheny .612
R.Manning .639
P.Garcia .633
P.Listach .638
So there you have it. In Brewer history Counsell is the 8th worst for players with at least the same amount of AB's. To be fair, there are only 60 Brewers with at least that many, so Craig would rank 52nd out of 60 with 995min AB's.
Now if you include the top 100 players in Brewer history (in number of AB's) Craig is above 16 players in OPS, ranking him 84th out of 100.
Bill Hall meanwhile ranks 23rd overall in OPS among Brewer players with over 1000 plate apearances at .772. .772 is an interesting career OPS. It is identical to one Mr. Robin Yount. Its not hyperbole, its just numbers.
I think a fair analogy would be if a brewer skipper benched Rob Deer down the stretch for Tiny Felder, or Beched Don Money for Ed Romero. It just seems like madness.
Not trying to bash Councell. Just trying to understand why we are bailing on our younger, better players for guys who have a long history of being flat out bad.
